Gospel of John 3: 13-17

Jim's Reflection

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. I wanted to try to make a connection from the famous verse in the Gospel, John 3:16 that is displayed at so many sporting events around the world...."For God so loved the world that he sent his only Son..." It's not uncommon to see that scripture verse displayed at high profile events, but some use it to close the door to heaven and limit God's mercy to the select few who say the right words. It's the next verse that reopens the door: "GOD DID NOT SEND JESUS INTO THE WORLD TO CONDEMN THE WORLD."

When we are successful at something many times we are awarded because of our achievements, particularly in athletics where we see champions holding up Olympic medals, Superbowl, World Series and NBA championship trophies and parading around with them for all to see. As Christians, we hold up the cross! It's ironic...we take what the Romans used to terrify and torture Jews with and say "see your weapon, we celebrate this cross as a symbol of our faith. It gives us strength!

As we celebrate and reflect on what the cross means at Mass this Sunday and the days beyond, let us live out the closing words of the song by Sarah Hart and Dwight Liles:

"Mercy you have given
Kindness you have shown
Love is You alone."

Peace and all good,
Jim
